The Braga Romana event aims to commemorate the early life of what was the Opulent City Bracara Augustus.

After the Cantabrian Wars that put an end to the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, and the Roman peace was established, Roman Emperor César Augusto founds three cities in the Northwest of Hispania, Bracara Augusta, Lucus Augusti and Asturica Augusta.

Bracaca Augusta was presumably founded between 16/15 BC in the Bracari region, located between the Lima and Ave rivers.

The new Imperial City owes its name BRACARA to the indigenous people that occupied the territory, and the epithet of AUGUSTA, in homage to the Emperor who founded it, having hosted the Conventus Bracarensis, inserted in the Tarraconense province.

Over the centuries, Bracara Augusta has gained preponderance, arriving even in the 4th century, with Emperor Diocletian, the Capital of the new province of Galicia.

As an imperial city, it gradually developed important commercial, legal, religious, political and administrative functions, providing the appearance of various public spaces of a playful character.

In this sense, Braga Romana intends to recreate the Roman universe, in particular the daily life of the so-called Bracaraugustanos through various Artisans, Merchants and Mystics as well as the delicacies of the Food Area.

Thus, during the event, the streets of Braga are filled with stalls, since the markets were one of the most striking expressions of the life of the cities of the Roman Empire. The markets arrived at Bracara Augusta from all points of the Empire to present and sell the most varied products. In the capital of Galicia, the mercaod was also a meeting point for cultures and knowledge, and an occasion for fun and leisure.

It is a case of saying in Braga be Bracaraugustano!

Dress up tightly, delight in the Roman delicacies revisited for you, be enchanted with the dancers and dance to the music of the God Lupercus, have fun with the pantomines of the actors, get drunk with the juices of Bacchus , learn strategies at games, greet Jupeter, honor Mars with the Lagionários and enjoy handcrafted products.

Revive Bracara Augusta!
