Christmas is coming. And although this is the favorite time of year for many Portuguese people, it is also a time that can generate some financial stress. Between the bills that have to be paid every month - from the house payment to the electricity, gas and water bills -, choosing Christmas presents, decorating and preparing the Christmas Eve, the expenses don't seem to stop piling up this month and so all savings tips are welcome.
We've put together some advice on what you should do if you want to cut down on your Christmas expenses. Here are some tips on how to save on Christmas gifts:
It is true that it is Christmas, but the fixed expenses of the other months, such as the house payment or the electricity bills, remain the same. And therefore, it is best to make a budget accounting for these expenses first, in order to understand how much you have left over for gifts and Christmas dinner.
Before venturing into shopping, think carefully about what you want to offer each person. This way, when you go to the store, you will already have a clear idea of the product you are looking for and will avoid giving in to a series of impulses.
Have you been planning the perfect gift for someone but the price is a little higher than what you had stipulated? Offer it to stockings! It is better to invest in a good gift than to buy several symbolic gifts.
This is a tip that works for everything: gifts, food or decoration. Take advantage of online stores and find out which one has the lowest prices for the various items you need to buy.
In addition to being more practical, by buying all the gifts on the same day and place, you also avoid unnecessary trips that represent an extra cost in fuel and parking.
If you have a large family, propose a game for this year. Put the names of all the family members on small pieces of paper, put them in a basket and give them to the family to pick one at random. So, instead of having to buy gifts for everyone, you only have to think of just one element.
Finally, when wrapping presents, use newspaper pages, old magazines or even wrapping paper reused from last year, and that way, you can not only save money but also help the environment.
