The magic of Christmas is already starting to fill the streets of cities.

This is the ideal time of year to relax at home in the company of family and friends, enjoy the Christmas markets and even plan the holidays and goals for the next year.

Despite the cold feeling, there are many experiences to cheer you up. And in this article, we've put together a list of 10 activities you can do to make the most of the holiday season.

Although this is a time when there are more family interactions, we cannot lose sight of the recommendations of the General Directorate of Health for us to spend this season in safety. This is because the number of Covid cases continues to rise in Portugal and Europe and new measures to curb the disease have already come into effect. So, once again, this year we will have to take advantage of the Christmas season, taking into account all safety rules.

1. Decorate the house

The time has come to look for the 'Christmas ornaments' and get to work. Start by assembling and decorating your Christmas tree and - if applicable - the nativity scene. You can also add other decoration details around the house, such as: candles, wreaths on the entrance and stairs, flower arrangements on the tables, lights on the terraces… There are several elements that you can use in your home's Christmas decoration and when preparing everything, for sure you'll have a good time with your family.

2. Visit the Christmas markets

Who doesn't like visiting a Christmas market? Here you can find everything: from animations for all ages, shops with Christmas decorations for the house, typical seasonal food… This is really an ideal plan to spend a winter afternoon with the family. In Lisbon, you can visit the Wonderland Lisboa, in Parque Eduardo VII. And in the city of Invicta, you can visit the Christmas Market in Porto, located in Praça da Batalha.

3. Write a Christmas card

It's quite possible that you have a family member or a great friend living far away that you haven't seen for a long time.

Christmas can really be a good time to write him a postcard wishing him a 'Merry Christmas'. Let's go back to the past and leave behind the technologies that accompany us daily and the quick WhatsApp messages. Sending a Christmas card can be a good way to surprise someone you care about. Who wouldn't want one?

4. Set New Year Goals

Every year around this time, we start thinking about the goals we want to achieve in the next year. And even in the 12 wishes that we're going to ask for when we enter the New Years.

Start dieting or sports, be more organized, study more, learn a new language… There are countless goals that we can outline, but the truth is that – often – many are unfulfilled. This year we suggest that you think of 12 realistic and easy-to-achieve goals each month of the year. Do you accept the challenge?

5. Enjoy Christmas Candy

The Christmas season brings with it many delicacies and many traditional sweets. The king cake, the rabanas, the children, the dreams… There are several Christmas sweets that you can find in patisseries and also in the Christmas markets. Take the opportunity to taste these sweets, but without exaggeration.

6. Behold the Christmas Lights

One of the most anticipated events this time of year is street lighting. When the lights are turned on in cities, it means that Christmas is coming. The truth is that ever since the streets were decorated with lights, many cities and towns began to compete for the most beautiful lighting. It remains for us to contemplate the atmosphere that all the luminous Christmas decorations create in the cities, taking a family outing at night.

7. Ice Skating

A Christmas sport par excellence. It doesn't matter if you know how to skate or not, if you find an ice skating rink, take the opportunity to have a new experience. Of course this can be a very fun time when shared with family and friends.

8. Christmas movie marathon

With the days getting colder outside, what could be better than spending a Sunday afternoon on the couch doing a marathon of Christmas series and movies, complete with popcorn and blankets?!

9. Gift Exchange Games

It is common at this time to make games with exchange of gifts. And one of them is really the instable friend. It is a very popular gift exchange at this time and can be made between friends, family or co-workers. Now, there are even applications to draw names and know who will be given a Christmas gift. Although the most fun is even in the traditional way: gather everyone involved, write the name of each one on paper and draw the invisible friend to luck.

10. Visit to Natal cities and towns

In addition to the Christmas markets, there are towns and cities that live the Christmas season to the full, having decoration, entertainment and commerce to the full. One of the best known Christmas villages in the country is Óbidos, which will receive all those who are curious until January 2, 2022.
