Taking a picture of the moon with your cell phone is not a very easy task. As the lenses of the devices tend to have an angle too wide, and the scenery - a dark background with a very bright spot in the middle - is not the most suitable for shooting. Therefore, the results are usually no more than a simple bright spot, but can often be confused with a street lamp.

Still, you can try to control some of the smartphone's settings and get an even decent image with their cameras. The result, of course, will not be as good as the use of telephoto lenses, which are the most recommended for this.

However, check out our tips for taking a professional photo with your phone or camera.

For mobile phones

  • Avoids digital zoom;
  • Use a tripod or support;
  • Keeps the phone focused;
  • Don't just look at the sky;
  • Use Pro mode to adjust the shutter speed, ISO and image brightness.

For cameras

  • Uses a tripod;
  • Uses a remote trigger or timer;
  • Uses a relatively high firing speed (1/125 or more);
  • Keeps the ISO low (starts at ISO 100 and increases as needed);
  • Changes the Camera Light Meter to “Spot Metering”;
  • Uses a lens over 200mm (the longer the lens the better);
  • Photograph as soon as the moon rises, when it is on the horizon, the atmosphere produces an optical illusion that makes it appear larger than it really is.
