"Bananeiro" in Braga
Christmas in Braga begins with bananas and Moscatel de Setúbal.
The banana fills the streets of the historic center of Braga with thousands of people who, in a true Christmas spirit, enforce the tradition of more than three decades that began at Casa das Bananas and that “eat a banana and drink a banana” in the hours before Christmas dinner.
At that time the establishment owned by Manuel Rio, was just a banana store, which to attract more customers, set up a small counter where they drank Muscat wine; and when the client asked for something to comfort his stomach, the owner would present him with a house banana.
These days Souto Street is flooded with thousands of people. Everyone goes to “Bananeiro” to toast Christmas with family and friends.
In Braga, there are many places that invite Christmas gatherings but it is at Casa das Bananas that the true Christmas spirit is felt.
