Portugal voted best European tourist destination
There are no two without three. Portugal was elected for the third consecutive year, the best European tourist destination by the World Travel Awards, the tourism Oscars, in a ceremony that took place in Madeira. In total, Portugal won European awards in 39 categories, three more distinctions than it had achieved last year.
In the race for best tourist destination, Portugal defeated countries such as Austria, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.
Among the 39 awards - 24 of which at European and 15 national level - have been awarded the best city break destination and best cruise port for Lisbon, while Madeira was voted the best island destination. Paiva Walkways in Arouca were distinguished as the best tourism development project and as the best adventure tourism destination. Turismo de Portugal received the award for best official tourism body.
