The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, also known as the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Braga, consists of a basilica, designed in 1784 by architect Carlos Amarante and completed in 1811, a long staircase, where the Via Sacra, several chapels, an area of ​​woods and a funicular.

It is since 1970 a property of public interest and was elevated to national monument before and because of the candidacy to UNESCO.

 

Already the Mafra National Palace, built by D. João V, a national monument since 1910, is a Baroque architectural ensemble formed by a royal palace, a basilica and a convent. In the interiors stand out the collections of Italian sculpture, Portuguese and also Italian painting, as well as a majestic library, two chimes and a set of six organs unique in the world.

 

The decision of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was announced in Baku, Azerbaijan. At the same meeting it was also decided that the Machado de Castro Museum, in Coimbra, will become part of the world heritage of the University of Coimbra, a distinction obtained in 2013 - at the time restoration work made the classification impossible. With this, Portugal has 17 sites classified as world heritage.
